Federal Hill Preparatory School (Prep) is a Baltimore City public school located in the historic neighborhood of Federal Hill. We have a diverse population of students including students from Locust Point, Riverside, South Baltimore, Sharp-Leadenhall, and throughout Baltimore City. At a time when there are many options to consider, Prep is succeeding- not just in helping students pass standardized tests but in preparing children for a lifetime of learning. Drawing on proven instructional methods from around the world, Prep gives its students the knowledge and skills they need to be good citizens today and community leaders tomorrow.
Because Prep follows an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework, we incorporate our environment across subjects including math, reading, humanities, science, art, and physical education. Our students participate in field trips that help them realize their effects on the environment. Our Teachers participate in green professional development. Both inside and outside of school, our student activists have been raising their voices in support of efforts to protect the environment, including bans on Styrofoam and plastic bags and the 2019 Global Climate Strike. Students, teachers and parents also incorporate environmental awareness on their way to and from school, biking and walking whenever possible and participating in the annual Walk to School and Bike to School celebrations.
On the school grounds our main areas of focus are water conservation and water pollution prevention, energy conservation, solid waste reduction, and habitat restoration. We continue to recycle paper, and students in some grades substitute reusable whiteboards for disposable paper whenever possible. We installed automatic light sensors to conserve energy across the school as well as a new HVAC system for clean air. We plant native plants around the school, and with help from community volunteers from Constellation Energy, we built a new pollinator garden and a sensory garden to protect habitats and create new settings for our students to learn and play.
At Federal Hill Preparatory "Going Green" is more than a school project, it’s a way of life. We started on the green path in 2010 with recycling paper and have added daily activities over the years to where we think about how our activities affect the environment every day. Our goal is a clean healthy environment in which our students can learn.
