Section A. Summary
Federal Hill Preparatory School (FHPS) is a Baltimore City public school located in the historic neighborhood of Federal Hill. We have a diverse population of students including students from Locust Point, Riverside, South Baltimore, Sharp-Leadenhall, and throughout Baltimore City. FHPS has PreK (including a half day 3 year old program) through 5th grade, focusing on readiness in reading, writing, math, science, art, and athletics. At a time when there are many options to consider, FHPS is succeeding- not just in helping students pass standardized tests but in preparing children for a lifetime of learning. Drawing on proven instructional methods from around the world, FHPS gives its students the knowledge and skills they need to be good citizens today and community leaders tomorrow.
At Federal Hill Preparatory "Going Green" is a way of life, and more than a school project. The activities described in our application are part of our everyday routine. We started on the green path in 2010 with recycling paper and have added daily activities over the years to where we think about how our activities affect the environment everyday. The activities on the following pages reflect the hard work of our students, teachers, administrator, staff and parents. Our goal is a clean healthy environment in which our students can learn.
Our instruction incorporates our environment in several subjects including math, reading, science, art, and physical education. Our students participate in field trips that help them realize their effects on the environment. Our Teachers participate in green professional development. Each April, we celebrate the earth and our accomplishments in sustaining our planet with an Earth Week celebration.
We conduct many practices that improve our impact on the environment. Our four main areas of focus are solid waste reduction, energy conservation, water conservation and water pollution prevention and habitat restoration. Waste reduction at our school started with recycling paper and plastics and now we are composting in our cafeteria! We are very proud to have been the leaders on a composting case study supported by the Office of Sustainability. To conserve energy we started by having our green team make signs that we hung up at every light switch reminding faculty and students to turn out the lights to making a logo for T-shirts that students can wear to school. To conserve water we built a rain garden and are stenciling storm water drains in the surrounding neighborhoods to prevent pollution of our bay. We support habitat restoration by planting indigenous trees and plants around our school including fruit trees and have built a bird sanctuary.
Since starting our mission to become a green school we have reached out to local businesses and schools promoting our green efforts. We share in recycling efforts with local schools. We are working with local restaurants in sharing a vegetable garden. We are working with various environmental groups to expose our students to the many ways we can have an impact on our environment. We are proud that our students are spreading the message to their families and communities about how each of us can impact our environment by making small changes in our every day lives.
